TikTok Shop has grown from an early experiment into a significant sales channel in the U.S., and that growth is accelerating. In the first half of 2026, U.S. sales more than doubled compared to the same period in 2025.

Thousands of brands across industries have already established a presence, with more than 5,700 U.S. shops passing $1 million in sales in the first half of 2026, eight times as many as a year earlier. As competitors are already gaining ground, a TikTok Shop presence is becoming a necessary part of selling online rather than an optional avenue.
When first expanding to TikTok Shop, many brands bring over the same strategies that worked for them on Amazon, and the results are often disappointing. This is where a lot of them are when they first come to us at Platinum Commerce, unsure why an approach that performed so well on Amazon isn't working on TikTok. The reason stems from the two platforms working in opposite ways, and the difference starts with how consumers typically arrive on each platform.
The two biggest platform differences
Purchase intention
Amazon captures existing purchase intention, while TikTok Shop creates it. On Amazon, shoppers usually know what they want, search for that product, and then buy from the results. On TikTok, most people aren't on the platform with the intention of shopping. Typically, they're leisurely scrolling through content, and a video prompts them to consider purchasing a product they weren't initially looking for.
That distinction is one of the two key differences between Amazon and TikTok Shop. As a result, habits that make a brand successful on Amazon, such as investing in search optimization and a broad catalog, can work against it on TikTok. There, shoppers are usually sold by the video before they ever reach the listing.
The Buy Box
On Amazon, every seller of a product shares a single listing: the brand, authorized retailers and resellers all sit behind one product page with shared reviews, and Amazon decides which seller gets each sale through the Buy Box. A shopper looking at a KitchenAid stand mixer on Amazon sees one page, while four sellers sit behind it and the Buy Box shows only one of them. TikTok Shop works the opposite way. Its policy allows each seller one listing per product, and unlike on Amazon, no listing is shared between sellers. The brand, each retailer and each reseller have separate listings, each with its own reviews, sold count and videos. Search for that same KitchenAid mixer on TikTok Shop and you'll find separate listings from QVC, HSN and unnamed sellers side by side, every price visible and no Buy Box choosing a winner.

Because of these two differences, each platform requires its own approach. Below are four areas where Amazon strategies often fall short on TikTok Shop, along with the approaches that work instead.
Four things that don't translate
1. People buy from creator videos, not search results
On Amazon, most sales begin with a search, and the listing that ranks highest has the advantage. On TikTok, most sales begin with a creator. Affiliate-driven sales account for an estimated 60 to 70% of total TikTok Shop GMV in the U.S. A growing share of checkouts now happens in the Shop tab, and shoppers typically discover the product in a video first. By the time they reach a product page, most have already decided to buy, so the listing has less influence than the content that brought them there.

This shifts where a brand's effort pays off. On TikTok, creator relationships and the video itself do the work that a well-optimized listing does on Amazon. Brands that see results tend to treat affiliate creators as a core channel, supplying samples, clear briefs and commissions that make the partnership worthwhile. This is an area where Platinum Commerce supports brands directly. We build an affiliate strategy tailored to each brand and work directly with in-house UGC creators and a wide network of affiliates. The product page still matters, but mainly as confirmation of what the shopper has already seen in the video that brought them there.
2. A few hero products beat a big catalog
Catalog strategy also differs between the platforms. Amazon rewards a broad catalog, since each SKU and variation can capture its own search traffic. On TikTok, a large catalog tends to divide attention and resources. Sales typically concentrate on a small number of products that demonstrate well on video.
Brands tend to see stronger results when they lead with one to three products that demonstrate well on camera, such as a product with a visible before-and-after or a result that prompts a reaction, and build creator content and promotions around them. The rest of the catalog becomes easier to introduce once those products have built an audience.

Book a call3. TikTok can lead to sales on Amazon (the halo effect)
Amazon is a marketplace, whereas TikTok is both a social platform and a marketplace. Its influence extends beyond the app. A shopper who sees a product in a TikTok video may buy it in the app, or may search for it on Amazon later. SmartScout's analysis of the top 10,000 Amazon brands found that brands with a TikTok Shop grew their Amazon revenue 5.2x faster than brands without one. SmartScout notes that this is a correlation, since brands that open a TikTok Shop often invest more in marketing overall, but the pattern holds across the data.

This changes how TikTok's value should be measured. Judging it only by TikTok Shop sales understates its effect, because some of the demand it creates is fulfilled on Amazon. Brands that account for this watch Amazon branded search and sales alongside their TikTok performance. They plan inventory for the spikes that follow when a video gains traction. They also keep pricing consistent across both platforms, so the two channels support each other rather than compete.
Platinum tracks the halo effect from a brand's very first TikTok video, so there's a clean starting point to measure against. Before content goes live, we collect about eight weeks of sales data to establish a baseline. After that, we take a weekly read across every channel where TikTok demand typically shows up.
4. TikTok Shop needs ongoing management
A well-optimized Amazon listing can continue to sell for months with routine maintenance. TikTok works differently. Videos tend to peak quickly and then decline, creators move on to new products, and the algorithm favors new content. Without a steady flow of new videos, sales typically drop.
TikTok Shop is closer to a media operation than a storefront. Sustained results depend on a steady pipeline of new creator videos, ad spend directed toward the content that performs, and regular live streams. For most brands, the hard part is keeping all of that running alongside an established Amazon business. That is where a partner like Platinum Commerce can help. As a certified TikTok Shop Partner with in-house creators, an affiliate network and our own live-streaming studio, we run the day-to-day operation. The shop keeps growing while your team stays focused on the rest of the business.

The bottom line
Not everything needs to change. Much of what works on Amazon still applies on TikTok, including high-quality product photos, accurate specs, healthy margins, and reliable fulfillment and customer service. The most valuable asset a brand brings to TikTok is its understanding of its customers and why they buy.
The core difference comes down to two different questions each platform prompts brands to ask.
On Amazon, brands ask, "How do we rank?" On TikTok, the question is, "Why would someone stop scrolling for this?"
Brands that succeed on TikTok Shop start with that second question and build their strategy around it. As more shopping moves into social platforms, it is likely to become the more important question of the two.
Platinum Commerce helps brands make that shift. As a certified TikTok Shop Partner, we provide shop management, affiliate programs, and live streaming from our Beverly Hills studio. If your brand performs well on Amazon and you want to grow on TikTok Shop, let's talk.
